2006 AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Convenors of the XIII Biennial Conference of the Film and History Association of Australia and New Zealand are pleased to announce this year's Nominees for the FHAANZ 2006 Research and Writing Awards. Short-listed nominees are selected by a jury of eminent film historians.

Winners will be announced in Melbourne at the Conference Dinner on Saturday 18 November. The Joan Long award for Achievement (Australian film history) and the Jonathon Dennis award for Achievement (New Zealand film history) will also be announced on the night.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

general

  • The 2006 FHAANZ Awards are open to any individual who or group of individuals which has published or exhibited a work of historical research on the Australian or New Zealand film industries during the awards period, which runs from 1 December 2004 to 30 November 2006 (unless applying for the unpublished writing award - see specific provisions below)
  • Patrons are ineligible to apply
  • Entries for the Research & Writing Awards must fall into one of the 3 awards categories (Monograph, Essay & Unpublished)
  • Entrants may only enter once in each category
  • Entries will not be returned unless a stamped self-addressed envelope is included with the application. At the end of the Awards process all submitted materials will be donated to the AFI Research Collection
  • Applications due for publication after the closing date for submissions must be accompanied by a publisher’s statement that they are in-press and will be published before November 30
  • The Awards Convenors in their sole discretion reserve the right to disqualify any entry or juror at any point in the judging process on the basis of the appearance of impropriety
  • The Awards Convenors in their sole discretion reserve the right not to confer an award

achievement

  • This category recognises achievement in the field of Australian and New Zealand film history in any form (e.g. writing, screen media, curatorship, education) undertaken during the Awards period.
  • Nominations for this category should be made to the Awards Convenors no later than 5.00pm on 31 July, 2006 on the relevant nomination form.
  • Nominator and referee should not be the same person

monograph

  • A monograph is defined as a non-serial publication that exceeds 25,000 words in total
  • Applicants should submit a sample of the work (no more than one chapter) and a copy of the monograph
  • Final nominees will be judged on the full work

essay/ book chapter/refereed journal article

  • This category recognises short-form publications less than 10,000 words in total
  • Applicants should submit the full work

unpublished writing

  • This is an encouragement award for an unpublished work of film history research
  • Works that have been accepted for publication but which are not yet published are ineligible
  • Applicants should submit no more than 10,000 words

ENTRY FORM - Research & Writing Awards

  • Call for entries closes 31 July 2006
  • Entrants must complete the entry form [MS Word] and either email it to ken.berryman@nfsa.afc.gov.au or mail it to the FHAANZ Awards Convenor at Australian Film Commission. PO Box 404, South Melbourne VIC 3205
  • Entries that do not meet the eligibility requirements or fully complete the application form and submit it by the due date will not be considered
  • Instructions for submitting supporting materials required for specific categories are stated on the entry form
  • The Awards Convenors reserve the right to disqualify any submission that does not meet these entry requirements
  • An entry may be withdrawn for any reason up until 5.30pm on 15 September, 2006 upon written request to the Awards Convenor
  • Entrants will receive an email acknowledgement when an entry has been received. Only short-listed entries will be notified beyond that point

  • Call for nominations closes 31 July 2006
  • Nominations must be made using the online nomination form

SELECTION OF CATEGORIES

The categories and awards are determined at the sole discretion of the Conference Organisers. The inclusion of a category one year does not necessarily dictate that it will be included in future years.


SELECTION OF JURORS

  • Jurors for the Research & Writing Awards are determined at the sole discretion of the Conference Organisers.
  • Jurors and juries are determined on a conference-by-conference basis.

JUDGING PROCESS - Research & Writing Awards

  • Entries will be judged on the basis of the information provided by entrants on the completed entry form and any supporting material.
  • All eligible entries will be reviewed by an independent panel of jurors appointed by the Conference Organisers and a short list of up to four finalists for each award will be nominated for consideration of the Film & History Association Patrons.
  • Winners will be announced at the 2006 Film & History Conference
  • The Awards Convenors and jurors may draw upon their own experiences to nominate entries to be included in the short list
  • In the event of a tie, the Awards Convenors can determine to grant the award to more than one nominee
  • Details of the jury and patron meetings will not be disclosed
  • The jury and patron decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding them

 

JUDGING PROCESS - Achievement Awards

  • Nominations will be considered by the Conference Organisers
  • The Conference Organisers may consult with the Awards Convenors and Conference Patrons in forming theirdetermination. The Conference Organisers may draw upon their own experiences to make additional nominations



TERMS & CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Each entrant represents, warrants and agrees that he/she owns the rights to all materials supplied in connection with an awards entry and such materials do not and will not defame, infringe or violate the trademark, copyright, patent or privacy rights or any other rights or any third party and are not the subject of any actual or threatened litigation or claim.

Each entrant shall indemnify the Film and History Association of Australia and New Zealand, assigns and licensees against any loss, cost or damage arising out of or in connection with any breach of any of the aforesaid representations, warranties or agreements.

No responsibility will be accepted for lost, damaged or misdirected mail. Entry of work is at the entrant’s own risk. All care will be taken but no responsibility.

By entering the Awards, each entrant expressly authorises the Film and History Association of Australia and New Zealand to use the specific text and visual materials submitted for the purposes of promoting the Awards in presentations, reports for publication, website and media activities as well as other forms of promotions/publicity materials in all media now known or hereafter developed.

Submission of an entry that meets all eligibility by the deadline as stated herein ensures that the entry will be reviewed and considered for nomination. No other representation or warranty is made concerning entries and all implied warranties are hereby expressly disclaimed.

If for any reason the Awards are not capable of running as planned due to acts beyond the control of the Film and History Association of Australia and New Zealand including acts of force majeure, acts of war, domestic terrorism, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the Film and History Association of Australia and New Zealand which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Awards, the Film and History Association of Australia and New Zealand reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to terminate or cancel the Awards without any liability.

If an entry is nominated for an award or receives an award, the manner and details of announcing such nomination and award is strictly within the discretion of Awards. Each entrant understands and acknowledges that all awards may not be given or publicised in the same manner, and some may be presented at the 2006 Conference while others may not.
